TSA workers are calling out sick instead of working for no pay, as they are being forced to find other ways to make money during Trump‘s shutdown.

According to CNN:
At New York‘s John F. Kennedy International Airport, as many as 170 TSA employees have called out each day this week, Thomas tells CNN. Officers from a morning shift were required to work extra hours to cover the gaps.

Call outs have increased by 200%-300% at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where typically 25 to 30 TSA employees call out from an average shift according to a local TSA official familiar with the situation.

Union officials stress that the absences are not part of an organized action, but believe the number of people calling out will likely increase.

“This problem of call outs is really going to explode over the next week or two when employees miss their first paycheck,” a union official at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport told CNN. “TSA officers are telling the union they will find another way to make money. That means calling out to work other jobs.”

TSA Workers Are Calling In Sick To Work Jobs That Will Pay Them

This isn’t a sickout or an organized union action. Just like everyone else, TSA employees have to keep food on the table and pay their bills. The electric company and the heating bill don’t care about a border wall; bills still have to be paid. TSA employees are calling in sick so that they can work other jobs that will keep the lights on.

In the post-9/11 era, it is the height of irresponsibility for any president to make America’s transportation systems less safe because he can’t keep his own campaign promise to make Mexico pay for the wall. Trump‘s shutdown is jeopardizing national security, and if something deadly occurs, it will be Trump who will bear the consequences.
