Trump was so scared of another shutdown that he tweeted his support for the border wall funding bill that Sean Hannity called a garbage compromise.

Trump tweeted:

There are a couple of different factors in play.

The wall is a con, so it is in Trump‘s best political interests to take the compromise. The compromise allows Trump to continue to demand a wall, which is a central strategy to his reelection campaign. Trump is going to spend 2020 telling Republicans that if they reelect him, he will get that wall built.

It is a guarantee that Trump was told by Senate Republicans that they are not going to stand by him if he vetoes this bill. Trump had the choice of taking his humiliating defeat now or taking it later when the Senate potentially overrides his veto. The president didn’t have the votes from his own party to continue fighting for his wall. Most importantly, Trump saw what happened the last time that he shut the government down, and he is terrified of another shutdown.

Trump was routed during the last shutdown, and if he ever pulls such a stunt again, the political damage that he suffers will be worse.

Donald Trump caved. There is no money for the wall, and it will be fun to see how quickly Sean Hannity and others change their tune to sing Trump‘s praises.
