Glenn Beck gets too radical for Advertisers

If Fox News and Glenn Beck were wondering how far he could take his radical right wing routine, they got their answer as three major advertisers have deserted Beck’s program after he called President Obama a racist. Progressive Insurance, Procter & Gamble, and Lawyers.com have all dropped Beck. Since the TV business runs on ad money, will this impact Beck’s show?

ChangeofColor.org put out a statement announcing that three companies had pulled their advertising. Two of the companies, P&G and Progressive claimed that their ads shouldn’t have been airing on Beck’s show in the first place. “No P&G ads should have appeared on this program in the first place,” said Martha Depenbrock, Brand Building Stakeholder Relations for Procter & Gamble.”To be clear, if any of our advertising appeared on the Glenn Beck show, it was in error and we appreciate you bringing this matter to our attention. We will do what we can to see that it doesn’t happen again.”

Progressive also said that their ads should not have been running during Beck’s show, “Our (advertising) order specifies no Glenn Beck We have confirmed with the network that our spots should not be running there,” said Linda J. Harris, Media Director at Progressive Insurance. This brings up an interesting point that many companies buy airtime and don’t follow up to make sure that the ads are being run in the contracted slots.

It should be pointed out that these companies are still advertising on FNC, but they don’t want anything to do with Glenn Beck’s program. Beck has one of the highest rated shows on cable news, but advertisers have to weigh the advantage of reaching his audience against the far right wing message his show carries.

The idea to people get advertisers to move away from Beck’s program was something that I first heard from Donny Deutsch on MSNBC, who made it clear that he didn’t think it was a good idea to try to get advertisers not to buy time on FNC, but it would be more effective to get them to shift their dollars away from Beck.

Beck’s conspiracy theories, race baiting, and controversy is not something that is attractive to many major corporations because they don’t need the bad PR, and headaches that can come with Beck going off the deep end. One of the fastest ways to lose advertisers is to engage in race based politics, which is what Beck did when he called Obama a racist.

I don’t think that this will change the way Beck does his show, because 2 million viewers a night is a powerful sign of success, but if he continues to engage in race baiting, there will be fallout, and he will lose advertisers. There is a line that Beck crossed when he labeled President Obama a racist, and advertisers will flee when race is brought up.

  1. These companies paying cold cash for advertising on beck’s show are wasting their money. Just knowing who they are has lost the business of 4 adults in my household…forever.

  2. but I’d rather have people figure that out for themselves and not get shut down by advertisers.

  3. Obama sympathizes with the minorities. He even said in college he hung out with the blacks, chicanos etc. That is a real statement. He elected sotomayer because he thinks that anyone else cannot identify with what its like to be a minority. I misspelled the ladies name, but thats not the point. Liberals in general do this to. They think that white people are a default group. More attention is given to those who are minority which is ridiculous. We do not treat everyone the same in America. It is a lie. Minorities are not oppressed, they are glorified. This is the point Glenn is making.

  4. Beck would not know what the truth is if it bit him in on the ass. He has lied and spun the facts so much, he can’t even tell what is fact or fiction. I hope that ALL his advertisers would pull out, in fact I think a letter writting campaign should begin to EACH and everyone of the idiots advertisers should begin. beck is nothing more than a sorry loser!!!!!!

  5. What kind of dictionary are you using?

And what are you ingesting to alter your consciousness while you are using the dictionary?

  6. Have you noticed that PMSNBC has become so pathetic and ratings are SO LOW, they only have one major advertiser on its network these day’s; and that’s GE…… go figure; Besides P&G sells nothing but a highly overpriced soap products that has lost most of its market share to its competitors due to declining quality issues in the last 20 years. And Lawyers.com is run by an ambleounce chaser that became famous for defending a low live that cut his own wife’ s throat and got away with it.

  7. The problem is that if pressure is not put on other companies to also pull out of the Glen Beck time slot, the right wing nuts are going to target the three companies that did pull out. We should show our support for the companies that pulled out by boycotting the ones that didn’t–and mostly letting them know that they are on our watch list.

  8. In what way is accusing our biracial president of having a “deep-seated hatred for white people” the truth? In what way, exactly? It’s all the right-wing has to offer: lies and smears.

  9. is not, repeat NOT, a news agency. They have no media license to report the news, a fact that they themselves admitted to when one of their “reporters” tried to sue them for making her report what she knew was a lie.

Fox admits they lie. They revel in it. The court agrees they lie, but also agree they have the right to lie as they are no more a news agency than TMZ.

  10. Fpx ratings are increasing each day. A few people are still watching NBC even though their reporters will only spin for Obama. Isn’t it curious that GE has borrowed billions from the government? Is there any bias here?

  11. DO NOT trust Obama.. please read… Written by Obama himself!!

  12. I truly believe that this Changeofcolor.org is definitely all about the black vote for Obama and is probably involved somewhere with ACORN.and the SEIU..they all are together on this. I’m positive that this is stemming back from the President and….mark my words… right here and right now….we are getting into a RACE WAR whether people want to look at it or not. If they listen to Beck and opened their eyes and ears THEN they can see THE CHANGE THAT OBAMA was REALLY talking about!!!
Just another way of the government to try and take control over everything in our lives…USING People whether they are black or white.
These compnay jusy lost my BUSINESS….I’ll use the natural way to clean things with good ole vinegar and water…works just as well and is cheaper.

  13. I’m not going to do business with P&G or Progressive because of their withdrawal of support!

If anyone needs to be admonished it is those that choose to stiffle free speech. It’s only speech that suits you that should be allowed on TV or Radio. You must be a communist or a Marxist! Last time I checked we are a democratic republic!

  14. I wonder what happened to Freedom of speech, obviously most of you only agree with freedom of speech when it goes along with your own thinking!! So sad that most of the citizens of this country are willing to deny others constitutional rights! Where will it end? Nobody wants to see the control the government is slowly taking over our lives, and slowly taking more and more everyday. It’s so sad that the people allow it and get angry when someone speaks up against certain issues!!! I don’t always agree with Glenn, but he has a right to say what he feels without consequences!!!!

  15. any company that pulls out because of a group called changeofcolor.org should be boycotted . since when do these major companies have to listen to idiots on both sides. the extreme right and extreme left are the same a bunch of loser crybabies who don’t want any body elses ideas to be heard. FREEDOM OF SPEECH is a right , that should’t be taken for granted.

  16. The threat of a loss of business from the many low SES Beck fans should not sway these advertsers at all. –No loss economically, right?

  17. Glenn Beck hasn’t said anything untrue. The President is clearly a racist. He has demonstrated it time again in both his words, and actions. If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I’m going to call it a duck!

  18. Excuse me, but if you wanna chime about freedom of speech you clearly hafta admit that in all the rights our country has, we also have the right to disagree & not spend $ where we feel it aids another’s cause that we don’t agree with. IE: these companies have every right ( & reason) to cover their asses(ts). I don’t really buy into Beck’s rhetoric simply because any guy who can pull a tear out when it suits his agenda isn’t genuine in my eyes so why would I believe or even listen to his opinions? I tend to think many of these broadcaster’s who are so vocal in their personal opinions or attacks aren’t even believing their own spew. It sells& gets them attention, lines their pockets but how do any of us know if they’re even genuine in what they’re saying? After a while we all know how they feel about certain issues & even certain people so they don’t need to keep cramming it down other’s throats. Being loud & controversial doesn’t make them correct, huh? I’ve heard Beck drone on & on & it’s always the same crap. I’d like to hear him even once say something relevant or at least a subject matter that he hasn’t already beaten to death.

  19. They didn’t pull out “because of a group called changeofcolor.org”. You’re mistaken…..they pulled out because they don’t agree with,or want the controversy & this site was simply quoted as posting the info about them pulling out. This comment is a perfect example of how people are either mis-informed or just wrong when voicing their own opinions & how many just go with it,insteada actually getting the true details. It seems like you’re advocating boycotting these companies based on FALSE info. See how ‘rhetoric’ can harm people or companies & WHY we need to pay close attention to FACTS before going off in any direction?

  20. Everyone speaks the truth SOMETIMES, but I’ll never believe anything Beck says becuz I once served him dinner & drinks. I know for a fact his BS about being on the wagon. Just saying,,,

  21. Who are you kidding and just who do you think pays both to keep FOX News on the air and Glenn Beck’s paychecks? YOU? Grow up and get an education!

  22. Why aren’t advertizers who are the bread and butter of the news media free to choose whether to advertize during his show? Is everyone in the world supposed to be accountable for their actions except Mr. Beck? This appears to be one of the biggest problems with what the party I have been a part of my entire life has evolved into. The Neo-Con influence appears to have turned what was once a GOP into a vain and greedy group of insecure people who fear that someone else might get credit for good solutions that they will lie, cheat, steal and even murder the United States of America so no other political party, but theirs has control and dictates how life should be and in the process they will also commit their own suicide, not unlike the jealous lover who comes up with the thought that if they can’t have their lover, no one can. Self centered attitudes. I have held on hope we can turn the party around. That hope fades with people like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh and networks and media that target people who are looking for someone to tell them what they want to hear both paid talking heads who get off on people hanging on their every word. Fox’s target market is smaller and less spread out than others, thus its ratings look good because there aren’t a lot of other stations targeting the same people they do, thus diluting the size of their viewing audience. Now, thanks to Glenn Beck getting a bit too enthusiastic with his role, the threshold between trading moral values for viewership was crossed and if the NeoCon influence suppresses or ignores introspection and humility, there will be a consequence and perhaps a practical lesson why vanity and pride fall in the sin column, humility and liberality in the virtue column.

  23. of course…because liberals have never been known for dishonesty and negativity when out of power. get over it, jackass. it’s called politics. if you actually watched the way he handled the Gates controversy and payed any attention to his background prior to the presidency, he certainly does have bias. “deep seated hatred” is indeed excessive, but he isn’t neutral by any means.

  24. Geico, Progressive Insurance and Proctor &Gamble are now on my ‘don’t watch any program sponsored by them’ list. As for Lawyers.com withdrawing support, that should be a good thing for Beck as who can ever trust a lawyer. Watch his lips – if they are moving – it is probably a lie. Glenn Beck comes too close to the truth so I can see why his detractors want to shut him up!

  26. They have every right to drop whoever they want. but we will be getting rid of progressive when it expires for their bad decision. I’m not big on boycotting things, but I support Glenn beck and will not support a company that refuses to advertise to the people who watch the show. If i’m not good enough to advertise to, i’m not good enough to waste my money in those companies either.
