Rachel Maddow is Becoming MSNBC’s Biggest Star

On Meet the Press today, it wasn’t Ed Schultz, Keith Olbermann, or Chris Matthews that was giving the progressive perspective on health care, but it was Rachel Maddow, who has seen her ratings soar as the nation debates health care reform. Maddow’s show has been rivaling Olbermann’s program as the top draw on MSNBC, and she could become the network’s biggest star.

While Olbermann has seen his ratings dip by 4% over the past couple of weeks, at the same time his rival Bill O’Reilly is reaching new heights on Fox News Channel, Maddow’s show is solidly in second place behind FNC’s Hannity, and she has averaged over a million total viewers on three of the last four nights for which ratings are available. Maddow also finished within 100,000 total viewers of Olbermann in three of the last four nights.

It would be easy to say that Maddow’s show is growing because of the health care debate, but that would not be 100% accurate. Ed Schultz also talks about health care on a nightly basis on his show, but he has not experienced the kind of growth in viewership that Maddow has. More than anything, her recent success is based on the type of show she has.

In comparison to Olbermann, whose shtick does wear thin after a while, Maddow actually discusses policy, and gasp, she is not afraid to have a guest on that disagrees with her. Unlike almost all of the primetime talkers out there, Rachel Maddow has tried to explain where the misinformation in the health care debate is coming from. She doesn’t yell like the other MSNBC hosts, but instead she attempts to inform from a progressive point of view.

Maddow has been going after Dick Armey’s Freedom Works on an almost nightly basis on her program, so it made sense that NBC would have her and Armey on Meet the Press today. However, it looks like there could be something else going on here. Could NBC be looking at making Maddow, not Olbermann the face of MSNBC? There has been griping over at NBC News about MSNBC’s strongly opinionated move to the left. Maddow could represent the style that NBC would prefer its cable sister adopt.

Rachel Maddow more than held her own today, so if this was a test for her, she passed it with flying colors. If her popularity keeps growing, I could see Rachel Maddow doing more crossing over to NBC. A program like Keith Olbermann’s will always be polarizing, but Maddow might have found a formula that can help MSNBC take the next step in growth.

  1. Again another LIBERAL media consultant on MSNBC (MSLSD). She’s a joke. Just like all the other liberal’s on that network. Their mainstay of topic is FOX news which kicks their butt’s daily in the ratings. Well I’m sure he’ll(Rachel), Kieth, and Chris(warm tingly feeling)Matthews, all will be looking for work when their Messiah is voted out. Or would they really prefer to live in SOCIALIST AMERICA. when they take away the rights to talk on TV and Radio for the conservatives, the next people they go after is the liberals, then we’ll all be listening to radio free america beamed in from Russia.

  2. The origins of “American Progressives” come from a split in the Republican Party during the presidential election of 1912. It was created by Teddy Roosevelt after he lost the Republican nomination to Taft. They were against corrupt business and corrupt politics.

Most closely related to the Progressive movement today are Constitutionalist or Libertarian ideals. It wasn’t until LBJ (and very recently by Gov Dean) that Democrats started to “hijack” the term. Please stop calling liberal Democrats (or even worse… mainstream Democrats) “progressives.”

  4. It’s unexpected for these guys to face a PhD in PolySci, and a Rhodes Scholar to boot. I loved it when she checked the notes she brought to MTP. Rachel deals in facts and logic, as well as reasonable debate. I’m a long time fan. So glad to have a brilliant, well researched person like her on the TEE VEE! Now, that’s progress.

  5. The fact is that Rachel shines a light on the GOP misdeeds and that upsets you repulicbots. Rachel speaks in truth and facts unlike Fucknews which just spreads lies, and then lies about lying. Right now she is the only real journalist on MSNBC and her ratings are increasing so go on hating she is going to here for so time to come. Oh and as for your dilution of voting Obama out in 2012 hahahahahahahahaha *gasp, air* never going to happen and by the way Hilary in 2016.

  6. I wrote to Rep. Napolitano in the 38th district in CA about this very subject yesterday. I plan on doing the same today to Sen. Feinstein and Boxer. I very respectfully implored them to fight for the public option and to get the White House to do the same. If I was a Rep or Senator, I would not vote on a bill that didn’t have the public option. This part of reform should not be negotiable under any circumstances. This is long over due. The Dems have the majority in both houses of Congress. I most certainly hope they take advantage of it for a change instead of giving in to the Republicans once again. I suggest all people that are for this to call orite your Reps and Senators and implore them to fight for the public option.
