Post-Racial America: 4th Of July Float In Nebraska Depicts Obama As Racist Caricature

obama float

We’ve been told time and time again that we live in a ‘post-racial America.’ Conservatives will tell you that the 2008 election of President Barack Obama proved that Americans are finally past racism. The Supreme Court hopped on board that message by gutting the Voting Rights Act of 1965 last year. Chief Justice John Roberts stated that while the VRA was necessary to combat the racist attitudes of local and state governments in the past, we have totally moved on and progressed as a society. Heck, we elected a black president twice? What more do you want?

Anyway, while conservatives would like to pull the wool over America’s eyes and state that racism is dead, the reality is that we are not living in an era of post-racism. Besides the repeated attempts by states to restrict voting access, require voter IDs and destroy the franchise for anyone besides Republican-voting white people, we see disgusting displays of racism thrown about on a nearly daily basis. Much if it is directed at our President. Whether it is depicting him in an unflattering light in political cartoons, describing a fist bump with his wife as “terrorist fist jab,” a rodeo clown using an Obama mask in a mocking fashion, a dummy of Obama hung in effigy or Obama figurines used as urinal cakes, the fact remains that racist depictions of our first black President have not subsided. Besides these overt expressions or racism, we have also seen the implied racism at work behind ‘birtherism.’

On the 4th of July, the town of Norfolk, NE held a parade. A number of floats were entered. Some of these floats were sponsored by businesses or local organizations. Others were merely created by local residents who wanted to participate. One such float that was created by a local resident depicted President Obama as a zombie wearing overalls. He was standing in front of his ‘Presidential Library,’ which was actually an outhouse. While there were some residents, specifically a woman who immigrated to the United States from Kenya, who found the float in poor taste and offensive, the majority of the townspeople who attended the parade loved it. In fact, the float was given an Honorable Mention award by the judges of the parade.

The parade’s committee members didn’t see any problem whatsoever with the float. Committee member Rick Konopasek stated that the float was equivalent to a political cartoon. He also suggested that since the majority of the people liked the float, there shouldn’t be a problem. Apparently, it doesn’t matter if a few people thought it was wildly offensive or not appropriate for a parade that is supposed to be celebrating our nation’s birth.

“We don’t feel its right to tell someone what they can and can’t express. This was political satire. If we start saying no to certain floats, we might as well not have a parade at all..,It’s obvious the majority of the community liked it. So should we deny the 95 percent of those that liked it their rights, just for the 5 percent of people who are upset?”

Parade announcer Wally Sonnenschein told the local news that since the town is very conservative, it is perfectly fine to be completely offensive when depicting the President.

“For the most part, this is a strong conservative community. I really don’t see anything wrong with the Obama float and I’m kind of amazed anyone is complaining.”

So, let me just get this clear. If something only offends a small portion of your population, then you should go ahead and run with it because the rest of the people will really enjoy it, especially at the expense of the minority. Also, if you label yourself as a conservative, then you don’t need to apologize for being offensive and racially insensitive because those are just your values and you are freely expressing them. But none of this is racist. Because, as you all know by now, we are living in a post-racial America.

  1. Yep, the cockroaches came out from all their dark corners. The collective stupidity in this country is astounding. Glad I don’t live in that little hell hole.

  2. Once again, tea chuggers demonstrate their perverse vision of “patriotism” by denigrating the POTUS with base toilet imagery.

  3. This is a disgrace, but coming from a town that supports the gop, not surprising. I imagine no float insulting the lame brain Dubya EVER was entered in this parade. Just look at the type of “representatives” these low I.Q. people admire McCain, Palin, Romney, McConnell all the worst of the worst racists. How many of the residents there are on Food Stamps, or welfare, I wonder?

  4. The majority of people used to be for lynchmobs and hanging, too. Why did that change, again? Oh, that’s right – because it was morally wrong.

  5. These same people would probably tell you they go to church every sunday and that they follow christen beliefs. Racism is rampant in this country and as well as lack of respect for the office. These people are not christen and never will be because god created us all and when the display this racism they are saying that their god made a mistake when he created people of color. Well tell that to god when you meet him! I would pay to be in the room when they have to explain that to him. They are racial bigots of the highest nature and the only thing they really show is just how stupid they are. You can’t fix stupid!

  6. The Odd Fellows sponsored the parade this float was in. Can you say hypocrites?

    Here’s their doctrine.

To improve and elevate the character of mankind by promoting the principles of friendship, love, truth, faith, hope, charity and universal justice.
To help make the world a better place to live by aiding each other in times of need and by organizing charitable projects and activities that would benefit the less fortunate, the youth, the elderly, the environment and the community in every way possible.
To promote good will and harmony amongst peoples and nations through the principle of universal fraternity, holding the belief that all men and women regardless of race, nationality, religion, social status, gender, rank and station are brothers and sisters
To promote a wholesome fraternal experience without violence, vices and discrimination of every form.

  7. This is pee baggers not wanting not wanting govmt but hiding behind their constitutional rights.
    what a joke!!!

  8. And I’m sure the Rethug party fell all over themselves criticizing this obnoxious display (sound of crickets).

  9. I find this float to be offensive, in poor taste, disrespectful, and racist. Anyone who condones this should be ashamed. I doubt they will feel ashamed because they are just as racist and bigoted as the ones that entered the float. It’s a sad state of affairs when any intelligent person doesn’t admit that this is only because President Obama is black. Racism is alive and well in the good old USA, and flourishing, I’m sad to say. Is this the prevailing sentiment of people of Nebraska? If so, I’m glad I don’t live there.

  10. I find the blatant racism against Obama to be appalling. It is not acceptable, but it is everywhere. I am disappointed in our country when so many have no idea what it is to be kind, caring human beings. But the attacks on Obama and his family, the homosexual hate-mongers like Hobby Lobby and thousands of other companies, and shows like Duck Dynasty and the rest show how the GOP and Teabaggers reach out to the lowest common denominator of the population. They can have them.

  11. For a racist if there is no lynching and hanging, Jim Crow and legal segregation then there is no racism.

For them, the Nebraska’s Obama’s Out House Library, and all the racist posters of Obama e.g. Obama as an African Witch Doctor, etc., well according to them that’s an opinion. In some way they claim other presidents were ridiculed, so all that is normal. But ridiculing Bush or Clinton over their politics and policies and ridiculing Pres. Obama over his race are two very different ridicules.

It seems like the justices don’t know the depth of their own racism.

  12. Are these same “open-minded” people going to accept Gay Pride or Pro-Choice floats…those are issues often taken up in political cartoons. Or will their true colors show up?? Odd Fellows should be embarrassed…but, (as above) they apparently don’t follow their own doctrine.

  13. Notice the hicks said 95% enjoyed it, so screw the 5% that didn’t. Now, take real numbers, because we know how Republicans can’t even do simple 2+2 basic math, and you likely had 65% against the float and 23 to 29% for it and the rest undecided. It is always that 23 to 29 number percentage wise. The GOP is just too damned stupid to realizr that and be truthful about anything.

  14. Another reason why Americans are really NOT respected around the world. The disrespect for the country’s President is appalling;Disgusting and downright embarrassing.

  15. Just like the KKK marching in the parades in the South when I was a child. This is really sad and in a parade sponsored by Odd Fellows???? “…holding the belief that all men and women regardless of race, nationality, religion, social status, gender, rank and station are brothers and sisters
To promote a wholesome fraternal experience without violence, vices and discrimination of every form.”

  16. I’m from Norfolk and very liberal. I’m watching my hometown take a drubbing. Much of it is deserved. I do hate to see people paint the town, and its people with the broad brush of negativity.

We libs usually complain when the conservatives do the same to minorities and women.

The town of Norfolk is really a fairly decent place to live as far as Nebraska towns go. We have quite a few residents who have minority heritage. Blacks, hispanics, asians, native Americans. A good mix of fine people who mostly get along.

A couple of decades ago, we had bigotry not unlike that of parts of the old South, but attitudes have changed considerably and continue to do so.

  17. So now America knows, people in Norfolk Nebraska are idiots, products of incest, inbred and just real, real stupid

  18. “Parade announcer Wally Sonnenschein told the local news that since the town is very conservative, it is perfectly fine to be completely offensive when depicting the President”———–
To me it means that he is admitting the fact that CONSERVATIVES are a very offensive group. CONSERVATIVES does not have any respect for the President of America, as long he is a Democrat, especially if he is black. Furthermore, I don’t want to hear their BS about them being “real Americuns”. To me they are just full of $$#IT!

  19. But your town leaders have a long way to go. To consider this float not to be “morally objectionable” is simply outrageous. For every child watching the parade with his or her parents, hearing a parent cheer or laugh at the float is a teaching moment: 1) that it is fine to mock the highest office in the land in such a manner, 2) that President Obama is a person to be made fun of because of his family, his beliefs and his leadership, 3) that people of color are worthy only of disrespect. There are many more lessons that child will take from this float and none of them are good. I feel sorry for any liberals living there.

  20. The Norfolk rednecks represent the same mentality as those who booed the US serviceman who just happened to be gay and the parents who gave their children hot dogs with Obama’s picture to “roast but don’t eat.”
And not too long ago they taught their children to cheer at a KKK lynching.
Maybe “Oddfellows” has a different meaning there.

  21. Evidently, racial change hasn’t hit the Town Hall or the politicians of Norfolk, Nebraska. Also, the crowd at the 4th of July parade didn’t seem to take offense either. Your town has a long way to go.

  22. No they did not change over morality. They changed because the FBI puts them in jail for years. Any town that condones that crap should have ALL of their federal cash cut off.

  23. President Obama has an IQ of over 150 and is very enlightend in this world of hate. So to the GO-Poopite minions allowing that float to even be in public……my G-d and to think Nebraska used to be one of the states with children of high intellect.

On another note, that supposed presidential library, sure looks like the one, out in back of gw bushes, illgotten home.

  24. Something similar happened in the parade in my town. However, the two offensive floats were anti-gay marriage and anti-abortion. I actually wrote to someone from the city who ‘forwarded’ my concerns. But in his response he said it would be a greater concern to start arbitrarily banning floats based on the message… Wonder how they would feel about a marijuana legalization float or a nudist float???
