Former Arkansas Governor and current Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee spent his Labor Day weekend fighting with California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom on Twitter. Huckabee started trolling the California Democrat over the jailing of Rowan County clerk Kim Davis, when he told The Daily Caller:
You’ve got Democrats who ignored the law when it was the law to have traditional marriage, Gavin Newsom in San Francisco as mayor, performed same-sex weddings even though it was illegal. Did he ever get put in jail? He most certainly did not.
Huckabee tweeted a link to the interview, prompting Newsom to respond with a series of tweets pointing out flaws in Huckabee’s analogy. Most notably, Newsom noted that after the California Supreme Court ordered him to stop issuing marriage licenses, he complied. Therefore, unlike Kim Davis, he was never in contempt of court.
After Newsom set Huckabee straight on his track record with regards to same sex marriages, the Republican switched gears and attacked Newsom’s policy towards immigration. Huckabee unleashed a barrage of tweets interspersing random newspaper headlines that implicitly criticized Newsom. Huckabee blasted Newsom both for performing same-sex marriages and for San Francisco’s immigration policy, during his tenure as mayor of San Francisco.
Governor Huckabee has become a non-factor in the GOP presidential race. Nationally, he is polling in the low single digits. His pathetic campaign is falling apart at the seams, but Huckabee is still under the illusion that if he gets irate enough about gays getting married, Republican voters will come flocking back to him.
However, Huckabee’s feeble trolling of California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom, comes across more as a sign of weakness than a show of strength. Surely, Huckabee is trying to copy the Trump model of running a campaign built on a foundation of insulting and ridiculing others. Unfortunately, for Mr. Huckabee, his desperate attempts to project “strength” by insulting Gavin Newsom, merely serves as an unintended exercise in self-ridicule for the former Arkansas Governor.
