Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told Trump that it would be an impeachable offense if he fires Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Sanders said, “Well, you know we have an unpredictable president who acts often in irrational ways.I hope that Mcconnell is right, but to my mind, we have got to do everything possible to make it clear that if Trump forces Mueller out, this is in fact an impeachable offense. It’s not acceptable. I’m glad to hear that a few Republicans, not senator Mcconnell but some others have made that same point.”
The two Republicans that Sanders was referring to were Jeff Flake and Lindsey Graham. McConnell’s answer made it clear that he doesn’t want to go anywhere near dealing with the fallout that will come if Trump fires Mueller.
One can see a clear line in the sand being drawn in the Senate. If Trump moves against Mueller, there is going to be a great deal of momentum behind a strong response. Interestingly, Trump’s attacks on Mueller appear to be increasing the momentum for legislation to protect the Special Counsel.
If Republicans refuse to protect Mueller, they may end up faced having to impeach him.
