Mitt Romney Lies His Ass Off To the NRA About Obama and Guns

Mitt Romney’s lie your ass off to get elected tour took the stage at the NRA’s annual meeting and uttered a barrage of falsehoods about President Obama and guns, so extreme that most of them had no relationship to any facts.

Romney had several of his now patented Mittens whoppers including, “And if we are going to safeguard our Second Amendment, it is time to elect a president who will defend the rights President Obama ignores or minimizes. I will.”

The problem with Romney’s claim is that there is absolutely no truth to it at all. In fact, gun control advocates have been very upset with the Obama administration, because they have proposed no gun control legislation. President Obama went as far as to tell the nation that he had no plans to reinstate the assault weapons ban.

On April 10, 2009, the White House said, “Obviously, we, while we were overseas last week, were surprised and shocked at the news at what had happened in New York. … That’s one of the reasons that increased money to hire more police officers as in the Recovery Act. I was asked specifically about assault weapons. I think the president would — the president believes there are other strategies we can take to enforce the laws that are already on our books.”

Romney stood before the NRA and claimed that Obama is limiting gun ownership, “This administration’s attack on freedom extends even to rights explicitly guaranteed by our Constitution. The right to bear arms is so plainly stated, so unambiguous, that liberals have a hard time challenging it directly. Instead, they’ve been employing every imaginable ploy to restrict it.”

But it is Mitt Romney who has a record of limiting gun ownership, and supporting a national assault weapons ban.

Let’s look at Mitt Romney’s record on the Second Amendment. Did you know that back in 1994, Romney supported the Brady Bill and the 5 day waiting period? Were you also aware that this self-proclaimed champion of Second Amendment rights signed the nation’s first permanent ban on assault weapons while governor of Massachusetts?

Here is Romney on Meet The Press supporting the assault weapons ban:

Mitt Romney stood before the NRA and lied about both President Obama’s record, and his own. Many gun owners have been conditioned by groups like the NRA to unthinkingly support Republicans. They have been told that the Republican Party will protect their Second Amendment rights.

Romney also claimed that Obama is proposing new laws to restrict gun ownership, and he promised to only enforce existing laws. President Obama has not proposed any new gun ownership laws. He has proposed zero new laws that would restrict gun ownership. When pressed on this claim, the Romney campaign can’t name any specific gun laws that Obama has proposed.

Mitt Romney also tried the tried and true tactic of whipping up paranoia in gun owners by claiming that if Obama wins a second term, he is coming for your guns, “In a second term, he would be unrestrained by the demands of re-election.” (The truth is that if Romney wins a first term, gun owners should be very concerned).

There is absolutely nothing in Obama’s record or comments to suggest that he has some secret anti-gun agenda planned for his second term. Since he can’t run on his record, Mitt Romney was trying the only strategy that he has at his disposal. He is going to lie about President Obama every day and hope that voters cast their ballots not for him, but against the president in November.

Just like in 2008, the biggest to threat to gun ownership won’t come from the candidate on the left. It is the Republican nominee that NRA members should be most concerned about. Gun control isn’t a big issue for the Obama administration. They seem to have little interest in it. In contrast, Mitt Romney has shown more than an interest in limiting the Second Amendment. He has actually done it.

This is a point that many gun owners who habitually vote Republican and fall prey to the NRA’s persistent right wing brain washing, which was on full display at their convention, won’t understand. The NRA is more interested in getting Republicans elected than protecting Second Amendment rights. This is why the NRA was so happy to give Romney a forum for his lies. The NRA knowingly helped Mitt Romney deceive their members and all gun owning Americans.

If you are one of those people who is worried about your Second Amendment rights, your best bet isn’t Mitt Romney.

It’s the reelection of Barack Obama.

  1. That’s all Romney can do is lie but our MSM will NEVER go after him for his lies because the MSM is controlled by his donors and fellow country clubbers.

So those lies will stink up our country and no one will expose Romney for the liar he is.

  2. in 08, the NRA was running with obama is going to take your bullets. then there was such a run on bullets the military had to stop brass company’s from shipping to anyone other than them because of the shortage of brass for shells…. i know i am a crazy lib member of the NRA so i get all their rightwing money raising propaganda…. meanwhile, during this pres. term, it has actually gotten easier to get anything you want, in any amount. i have been to numerous gun shows in the deep south, and you can walk out with a 50cal semi, and barrel full of shells… all cash transactions, and no b.g. check.

if willard ever said a truth, the world would stop… willy has gotten more pants on fire from politifacts than anyone lately… except maybe sister palin….

when will willy do a real press conference? so far he’s only talked to our pals at newscorpse.

  3. From bullets to Bibles — the story of the GOP’s 2012 presidential campaign and the irrational, anti-Obama fear-mongering among the conservative throng.

Romney judges a person’s qualifications to lead based on the depth of one’s wallet rather than the depth of one’s wisdom. He evaluates a person’s net worth based on the value of one’s portfolio rather than one’s value to their community.

His ad campaign: “Vote for me. I’m filthy rich and know lots of other very rich people, I like to fire employees, I don’t care about the problems of poor people, I don’t believe in federal regulations, I’m totally clueless about international relations (other than the best ways to hide my income in offshore bank accounts), I don’t mind spending millions of dollars to sling mud and smear my opponents …. and by the way, did I say I’m rich?”

Mitt “It’s a rich man’s world” Romney’s campaign is based on unabashed lies, frequent flip-flops, and blatant pandering that he believes will help him to get nominated … strategically planning to hit his reset button during the general election.

However, Romney’s team appears to unaware of YouTube –the online repository of instantly accessible video clips, providing evidence of the previous policy positions of Mitt v.1, Mitt v.2, Mitt v.3, etc.

  4. I hope each and every instance of Willard’s outrageous and equally pointless lying are used in the presidential campaign against him. If he can so easily run away from his own record and utter such falsehoods about the president in order to score political points, I see nothing that would prevent similar behavior if he ever became president. The more this presidential campaign goes on, the more and more obvious it is that Willard Romney is dangerously flawed. But in their collective and mindless hatred of this president, most Republicans are willing to overlook these dangerous character flaws in order to see President Obama defeated.

  5. Funny thing about the Mormon church (and Dominionists in general)… they have an “out” for lying. If you’re lying for God, it’s OK. If you deceive people in order to “bring” them closer to conversion, it’s a good thing. I don’t remember the specific arguments and how they went, but it’s very similar to “Heavenly deception”.

For dominionists (back when I was a cult member), the argument was that if the people you were dealing with knew your real goal was proselytizing them, the “demons” inside of them would make them leave or resist you. You had to deceive the evil spirit in them so that your “message” could be heard.

That’s why I tell people you cannot ever trust a dominionist or a member of a dominionist or even fundamentalist church – their “friendship” or friendliness is too likely to be bogus and in an attempt to change you to be like them, and to get you to lower your guard. That was specifically what we were taught – you weren’t supposed to associate at all with the “world” except for “witnessing” (proselytizing) and “Make a friend, be a friend, bring a friend to Christ” was a slogan I remember well – even in suspect movements in the mainstream churches.

I think it’s the same for Mormons too…

  6. We have been NRA members for a long time. It has gotten increasingly extreme and political in other areas out side of the second amendment, and no, I am not happy with them. There is no way I am ever voting for a republican candidate again, certainly not because of one issue, when I am against their stance on every other subject. Obama has NOT gone after the second amendment at all. I knew this was a crock before Mitty-R ever opened his mouth.

  7. I read somewhere that many if not most NRA members are more responsible and aware than the leadership. The thing is that every 4 years, the NRA stirs up fear and anger against the non-existent bogeyman of Democrats coming for people’s guns. They seem never to have seen a regulation they like, even when that regulation would go a long way toward keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people like Jared Loughner of Arizona, or the Virginia Tech shooter.

  8. I’ve never seen a more dishonest politician than Romney. Little bush jr lied constantly, but my God. This guy doesn’t have an honest bone in his body. He is the emptiest of empty suits.
