Lewis rejected Trump’s message of fear and division on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports, “That message is the wrong message saying in effect that we cannot create one America, one people, one family. I have said it over and over again. We all live in the same house, the American house. You know, we are a country of immigrants. We all come from some other place, and it does not matter whether we are black or white or Latino or Asian American or Native American. We live not just in an American house, but in a world house, and as Dr. King said on many occasion, we must learn to live together as brothers and sisters, if not, we will perish as fools.”

Rep. Lewis who spilled blood for the right to vote talked about what it would mean if Stacey Abrams won in Georgia, “Well, I moved to the state in 1963 when I was 23 years old and I saw many changes a greater sense of hope, and a greater sense of optimism. I grew up in rural Alabama, and 50 miles from Montgomery, and living her and getting involved in the life and the city and the state of Atlanta, her election will mean unbelievable, just unbelievable sense of hope and progress. Not just for the state of Georgia, but far-reaching for the south and the nation, and I think that she is going to inspire people around the world to believe that we all can change. That we all can bring about progressive change.”
The best way to understand why Democrats are poised to do so well in the midterm election is to compare Lewis’s message with the dark and gloomy message of division and fear being spread by Trump. Hope and optimism win elections because the American people are hopeful people. Human beings want to be optimistic. They want to believe in a better world and future, and that’s why the message of Rep. Lewis will likely be reflected in the results of this election.
