Former Solicitor General Neal Katyal said that Trump’s lawsuit against the DOJ would blow up in his face and hurt him.
Katyal said on MSNBC’s The Beat With Ari Melber:
Like so much that Donald Trump touches, this is going to blow up in his face. This motion he’s file for a special master, first of all, nobody waits two weeks after a search to request a special master. So he sat on his hands, and then he got caught up because he had all this ridiculous criticism of the government search, and his hand was forced to file this thing. The Justice Department team that reviewed the of from the search can’t be trusted, but the problem is the team had this information for two weeks and have passed it on presumably at this point so that toothpaste can’t be put back in the tube.
And here’s the most important thing — putting myself in the Justice Department’s shoes, back when I was in the Solicitor General’s office, this filing by Trump is what I’d want because up until now, I haven’t been able to tell the government’s side of the story. Why did we search? What did we do? Now, as a result of this filing, you’ll be able to tell much more of that story in open court because the Justice Department, unlike Donald Trump, only speaks through court filings.
And there’s one other tell about this motion, Ari. You know, Donald Trump, you know, filed this in Fort Pierce, which is 67 miles away from Mar-a-Lago. There happens to be a federal courthouse next to him in West Palm Beach. He didn’t file it there. He filed it 67 miles away, where the judges tend to be all Trump appointees. He’s shopping. It’s not going to work, and it’s going to wind up hurting him.
The American people have seen this routine before. Donald Trump did the same thing after he lost the 2020 election. Trump went court shopping because he was looking for a court that would rule in his favor and give him a justification that he could use to bolster his lies.
Trump’s new lawsuit is a born loser, but Trump needs a ruling to boost his lie that the DOJ searched his club for political reasons.
The failed former president is trying all of his old stunts, but he is up against the Department of Justice, and his tricks aren’t working.
Donald Trump is not only going to lose, and he will also help the DOJ make a stronger case against him.
