Mississippi Public School Dumps Jefferson Davis And Renames Itself After Barack Obama

A Mississippi public school is dropping Jefferson Davis from its name and will be renaming itself after former President Barack Obama.

The Clarion-Ledger reported:

Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson announced at the Jackson School Board meeting Tuesday evening that school stakeholders voted on Oct. 5 to rename the school Barack Obama Magnet IB.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,†she told the board.

A demographic breakdown of Davis Magnet’s enrollment for 2017 shows 98 percent of the school’s students are black.

Jefferson said the school community wanted to rename the campus “to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.â€

When conservatives say that they are protecting “heritage and history” what they are referring to is the culture of racism and white superiority. The renaming of the school for Barack Obama is exactly what the white supremacists and racists fear the most. No matter how much terror and bigotry they try to poison our society with, no matter how strong of an ally they may have in the White House, America remains a nation of progress.

Children deserve to have their school named after a man that they can be proud of. Jefferson Davis tried to destroy a nation. Barack Obama had a vision of a nation governed by its better angels.

Here is hoping that more schools honor Obama and dump the Confederacy.
