GOP Congressman Distorts Obama Speech, Says President Defends ISIL

Republicans have been in a tizzy since President Obama’s Thursday speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. The President had the audacity to point out that Christians have sometimes committed atrocities. That honesty has whipped GOP pundits and politicians into an Obama-bashing frenzy. On Friday, Republican Congressman John Fleming (LA-04) ratcheted up the hysteria, accusing the President of “creating a propaganda bonanza for terrorists“.

Fleming continued by distorting Obama’s remarks, with this paraphrase:

What he’s (Obama) really saying is ‘Well look, these are freedom fighters, just like the patriots of the Revolutionary War. And they’re no different, their service is just as honorable. And nothing could be further from the truth.

Of course, nothing could be further from the truth than Fleming’s paraphrase. The Republican Congressman conveniently failed to mention that the President referred to ISIL as ”a brutal, vicious death cult”, which commits ”unspeakable acts of barbarism”. Obama’s words hardly sound like an endorsement of ISIL. The President minced no words in describing the group as brutal and vicious.

Fleming made his comments on the Family Research Council’s Washington Watch Friday radio show. The comments mostly went ignored over the weekend, but took on new significance Monday, when it was also revealed that fellow GOP Congressman Steve King (IA-04) sent out a racist anti-Obama tweet. The tweet depicted a cartoon of the President donning a turban. The caricature was drawn to give Obama’s face stereotyped Arab features.

Fleming has been one of the most conservative ideologues in the U.S. House since he first entered the House in 2009. Fleming has long struggled with keeping his tenuous grasp on reality. In 2012, he was justly ridiculed for unwittingly putting a satirical Onion article about Planned Parenthood on his Facebook page. The Congressman posted a piece about Planned Parenthood opening an 8 billion dollar “abortionplex” in Topeka, Kansas, without realizing the article was satire.

The Congressman is not able to distinguish satire from reality. Nor, apparently is he capable of accurately paraphrasing a short speech. In a speech where President Obama condemned ISIL as a “death cult”, Congressman Fleming interprets Obama’s words to be supportive of ISIL. Nothing could be further from the truth.

  1. Just another indication of the stupidity that flanks the gotp. More lies and distortions… its killing them they cant get anything on Obama so they have to make stuff up. Simply pathetic. These so- called “Christians” sure do lie ALOT. It seems they spew many Bible verses, but dont understand the meaning.

  2. The President knew exactly what would happen as a result of his speech. He’s playing these people like violins. He knew they would go off the deep end, overinflate his intent and oversell their stupidity. They never learn.

  3. Serious question. Why do republicans look like child molesters and mass murderers?

Seriously they have no color, their eyes are cold and most of them are of the no lips double chin variety

  4. This poor, very ignorant, shallow, narrow-minded, pitiful human being must truly be the result of what inbreeding and being brainwashed from birth can do to a persons mindset and soul. He could also be highly considered as a shining example of how acts of incest, drugs and greed (and just being one really power-hungry asshole) can define how a person acts and looks like in our public life today. In my opinion. I would not vote for him…

  5. Congressman John Fleming can fool anyone with his looks. Now we see that looks are deceiving since he is a truth twister. His words are very much like Sara Palin’s. Where did these southern politicians go to school? Wherever he went to it seems, the only text book he learnt from was the bible. What a shame.

  6. I had the same impression of them as you have. They are really creepy looking people. It must be the results of their constant brainwashing from birth (by their “creators”), acts of incest,’drugs and just pure greed. Plus their constant inbreeding policies to replenish the earths decreasing existence of the “superior race”(in their minds), which is the blue eyed, blond haired, blue blooded, white skinned race. He is himself probably responsible for artificially inseminating many of human cattle breeding stock himself (to maintain herds standards). Something along those lines. OR THEY COULD ACTUALLY BE REAL VAMPIRES!!! NO SHIT SHERLOCK!!! [WINK].

  7. They are probably all VAMPIRES and DEMONS from HELL or merely under their direct control. [WINK]

  8. This is what you get when you have mostly morons voting in elections. This guy would otherwise be making you a burger at McDonalds.

  9. I like the state where I’m now living, I just don’t like that I live in this dingbats’ district. This delightful example of a rethuglican is a doctor, believe it or not. There are some very nice people living in Louisiana, he’s just not one of them.

  10. Fleming is another Republican medical doctor who gave up his medical training, in his case paid by the U.S. Navy, to enter politics in order to prevent society from advancing. He also ownes a chain of Subway sandwich shops and does not like the idea of providing his workers health insurance.

    What a guy!

  11. Anyone else notice that Mitch McConnell and one of the odious Kock’s have the same sort of mouth, mean looking and downturned, I would like to see a picture of them side by side, that would truly be the evil twins.

And – why does no one over tell a rethug –
THE NAME OF THE PARTY IS THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, NOT THE DEMOCRAT PARTY.
Full disclosure – I hate rethugs.

  12. .Typical slanderous, uneducated, ill-bred, anti-American tea party republican repeating the same old tired mantra against the President of the United States as he steals his salary from the American people for not working!

  13. John Fugelsang said it best, In reply to Bebe: Jesus was a radical, nonviolent revolutionary who hung around with lepers, hookers and crooks; wasn’t American and never spoke English; was anti-wealth, anti-death penalty, anti-public prayer(Matt 6:5); but was never anti-gay, never mentioned birth control or abortion, never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a co pay; and was a long-haired, brown skinned homeless community-organizing anti-slut shaming Middle Eastern Jew. Now that is the Jesus I read about in my Bible. You too, Bebe?

  14. I think that I heard that this kind of a person does not actually like to ever wash their hands under any circumstances if they think that they can possibly get away with it. YUUUUK!!! Some even say that they believe it makes their food taste a lot better. This could be what they mean when they say that the rich have “the taste” for things. Can you really believe that a-holes like this get voted into our govt. offices???

  15. These kind of people must actually believe that their personal shit doesn’t really stink. [WINK]

  16. Like all the other RWNJs, if you can’t dazzle them (the public) with brilliance, baffle them with … excrement of the male bovine variety. The apparent stock in trade of the Republican Party is lies and prevarication.
