The Virginia Republican Party is taking a cue from Trump by launching an attack on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ralph Northam for opposing slavery and white supremacy.
The Virginia Republican Party tweeted:
.@RalphNortham has turned his back on his own family's heritage in demanding monument removal (1/2)

Northam responded to the Republican attack:
I feel fine about turning my back on white supremacy. How does @EdWGillespie feel about the president's position? https://t.co/zhx2nWCGpH

The Virginia Lt. Governor’s response was basically, I’m good with opposing racism and hate. How does your guy feel about Trump defending Nazis?
Republicans have apparently learned nothing from watching Trump crash and burn while defending racists. The Virginia GOP set themselves up and walked right into the most obvious trap in politics. Racists and white supremacists are bad. The heritage that Republicans are defending is slavery. What the Republican Party of Virginia was doing was calling Northam a traitor to his race.
Trump is reshaping the Republican Party in his own image, and that image increasingly looks like a Klan rally.
