New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin Endorses Barack Obama

ImageNew Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin endorsed Barack Obama this morning. In his statement, he made it clear that his top priority is rebuilding his city, “In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Senator Obama worked to help address the needs of our Gulf Coast communities. As the Gulf Coast continues to rebuild, other cities have faced tragic disasters across this country.”

He continued, “Therefore, it is critical that this country’s infrastructure and emergency response systems are evaluated and rebuilt to sustain our cities and protect our families. What happened in Louisiana should never happen again.”
Nagin stressed that Obama is a new generation of leadership, “I have learned firsthand that a unified constituency can make what seems impossible, possible. Senator Obama represents a new generation of leadership, one that can help heal the divisions of the past and unify this country so that together we can build a stronger future.”

The Mayor talked about his first hand experience with the Washington system, “Since the immediate days following the storm, I have been travelling to our nation’s capitol to advocate for policies that aid our rebuilding effort. I know firsthand, we desperately need the leadership of someone committed to changing the system in Washington that can hold us back from moving forward. For these reasons, I endorse Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nominee.”

Nagin has done a fantastic job leading New Orleans, but he has a habit of speaking off the cuff. I think everyone remembers this comment.

MSNBC has been reporting that Obama has picked up four superdelegates today, but his official website lists only two, Nagin and Rep. Joe Donnelly, so we’ll go with the total needed being 148 for now.

  1. Household spending on clothing and footwear was lower in 2008 than at any time since 2001-02, according to the latest annual report on how British households spend their income.

Nationwide, the average household weekly expenditure in 2008 – the most recent data available – was £471 ($770), up from £459 the year before. Spending on clothing and footwear was £21.60 per week, down from its record of £23.90 in 2004-05, since when it has fallen steadily.

The study, by the Office for National Statistics, is based on a sampling of more than 5,200 UK households of all sizes and incomes.

Most other categories of spending rose in 2008, with food and non-alcoholic drink rising to £50.70 per week amid strong food price inflation, from £48.10 in 2007.

Transport remained the largest single area of expenditure for British households, with the average weekly spend increasing to £63.40 from £61.70 the year before, mostly reflecting a sharp growth in fuel prices.

Recreation spending was the second largest category after transport, and a quarter of that was spent on package holidays almost exclusively outside the country.

Households in which the “reference person” – the main breadwinner – was aged between 65 and 74 spent the most money each week on recreation, at just under a fifth of all their expenditure.

Some housing costs increased sharply between 2001-02 and 2008. Mortgage interest payments and council tax totalled £58.40 a week in 2008, a rise of more than half from 2001-02 when the average weekly spend was £39.30.

The survey also found regional differences in household expenditure, with homes in Northern Ireland having the highest average weekly spend at £479 a week. Households in Wales had the lowest at £406.70.

Families in the bottom 10 per cent of incomes had the lowest rates of computer ownership at 33 per cent, while those in the top decile had a 98 per cent computer ownership rate.
