Rachel Maddow Skewers The Laughable WH Strategy To Avoid A Trump-Mueller Interview

Rachel Maddow ridiculed Donald Trump’s legal team on Monday, saying their efforts to keep the president away from Robert Mueller are becoming increasingly desperate and laughable.

The MSNBC host cited a new report which revealed that the president’s lawyers have handed over documents in hopes of “limiting” the scope of any possible Trump interview with the special counsel.

“Raise your hand if you think this is going to make this whole problem for the White House go away,” Maddow said, holding back laughter.

Maddow explained how unlikely it is that the latest Trump gambit will actually work:

Trump’s lawyers hope this evidence eliminates the need to ask the president about some of these episodes. Raise your hand if you think this is going to make this whole problem for the White House go away. Raise your hand if you think Robert Mueller and his prosecutors will not just be delighted, they will be absolutely satisfied to receive written narrative vinettes from the White House Russia lawyers providing their perspective on these matters that are under investigation. I mean, give him credit. How many other options do they have? The reason the president’s lawyers are trying to do this is obvious to the point of being emphatic. As Carol Lenneg puts it in her scoop tonight at the Post: “Trump’s legal team shared the documents in an effort to limit any session between the president and the special counsel. The decision to share materials with Mueller’s team is part of an effort by Trump’s lawyers to minimize his exposure to the special counsel.” This latest gambit is … “in hopes of curtailing the scoop of a presidential interview.” I bet.

According to the same report cited on Maddow’s show, “President Trump’s attorneys have provided the special counsel’s office with written descriptions that chronicle key moments under investigation”

In other words, the president’s lawyers know he can’t get through an interview without spewing blatant lies about his campaign’s ties to Russia or his efforts to undermine the special counsel investigation, so White House attorneys are hoping to prepare more believable falsehoods instead.

How dumb does the White House think Robert Mueller is?

The latest effort by the president’s lawyers to dodge a Trump-Mueller interview isn’t even clever. Clearly, with the clock ticking down and the special counsel closing in on Trump, the White House is becoming increasingly desperate.

But since he began this investigation last year, Robert Mueller has repeatedly shown that he is not messing around. When all is said and done, there will not be a single stone left unturned. With the recent news that Mueller has subpoenaed the Trump Organization, it’s clear that the investigation is still firing on all cylinders.

If Trump’s legal team truly thinks that the same man who has been conducting this investigation since last spring is about to roll over and let the president off easy, they have another thing coming.
