Republicans in the House of Representatives – a group of lawmakers without any shame – have officially gone all in for Donald Trump.

According to Politico, the GOP has formally filed impeachment articles against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein – the man who oversees Robert Mueller’s Russia probe.

It’s another blatant effort by the Republican Party to undermine and obstruct the special counsel investigation as it circles around the president.

The full report:

House conservatives have filed articles of impeachment in an effort to oust Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the overseer of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

The articles, filed late Wednesday by Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) — two top Trump allies — blast Rosenstein for what they allege was a failure to respond to congressional document demands. Senior Justice Department officials have rejected the criticism and described historic levels of cooperation with Congress to share files connected to the FBI investigations of Hillary Clinton’s email server and Trump campaign contacts with Russia.

The Republicans have gone fully off the deep end

As I wrote when Republicans were drafting these impeachment articles in April,  the GOP no longer has any interest in changing the subject from Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling and Trump obstruction.

As the evidence continues to pile up against the president, they seem to have accepted they will no longer be able to brush all of this under the rug.

Instead, their goal is to undermine the credibility of the investigation and obstruct it in any way they can – to create an entirely different reality. As they see it, their best shot is to go after Rosenstein by baselessly accusing him of wrongdoing.

If Republicans can taint the investigation and throw as many wrenches into it right now, they feel they’ll be able to put a stain on whatever Mueller eventually finds – no matter how damning it is.

Not only does this move show how far off the deep end the GOP has gone for Trump, but it’s doing immense damage to American institutions and – if Rosenstein is actually removed – will push the United States even closer to a constitutional crisis.

If Republicans are truly interested in filing articles of impeachment against someone, they should look toward 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
