Rachel Maddow pointed out on Wednesday that the Democratic Party’s post-State of the Union address strategy is essentially to pretend Donald Trump never gave the address at all.
As the MSNBC host said, even though Trump demanded during his speech that Congress shouldn’t investigate him – or else! – the Democrats have quickly turned around and launched a major probe into the president’s potential crimes.
“I don’t know what the president was hoping for last night when he decided to say in his State of the Union address that Congress shouldn’t investigate him anymore or the country gets it, but I cannot imagine this was the desired result,” Maddow said.

I don’t know what the president was hoping for last night when he decided to say in his State of the Union address that Congress shouldn’t investigate him anymore or the country gets it, but I cannot imagine this was the desired result of that now indelible and permanent line that will always be part of the history of the Trump presidency and the history of the State of the Union address in America. And these five threads that the Intelligence Committee says they’re going to investigate, this isn’t just a Democratic wish list for what they hope people might look into. This isn’t just like a table of contents for stuff to worry about and sweat over in the night. This is now the stated parameters of the new active Intelligence Committee investigation in the House of Representatives under Democratic leadership who have subpoena power.
Trump is under investigation, and he looks weaker than ever
Donald Trump likely assumed he would look tough in his State of the Union address on Tuesday when he demanded Congress stop investigating his potential crimes.
But less than 24 hours later, he looks weaker than ever as Rep. Adam Schiff, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced a wide-ranging investigation into Trump’s financial entanglements with Russia and beyond.
As PoliticusUSA’s Jason Easley noted earlier, through this investigation the committee “has the power to bring Trump and his family down.”
Donald Trump’s tough talk on Tuesday night has already been torn to shreds by Democrats. Not only is this president facing a very serious and new congressional investigation, but he looks weaker than ever.
