The Myth of Self-Regulation
If a government has no right right, and moreover, no obligation to protect the people on whose behalf it was established in the first place, then what rights and obligations do governments have?

Today is the day we go to vote in the 2010 midterm elections. The results of this election will reverberate far beyond our localities; they will affect the entire country and indeed, the entire world.
The Indiana midterms offer little for liberal and progressive voters. Evan Bayh’s retirement opens up an opportunity for an extremist Republican to replace him.
Unregulated capitalism gave us the evils of the Gilded Age. Unregulated capitalism gave us the crash of 2008 that has left not just America, but much of the world, reeling.
“A spigot of defense spending opened up after 9/11, yet for years, there has been dismal oversight of contractors handling hundreds of billions of dollars in contracts for weapons and other goods and services.”
I’m tellin’ ya’, you’re going to be hearing a lot about how lame ducks shouldn’t be doing anything – because, well, if they were to do something, it would be more liberal legislation than the Republicans want. In order to avoid this, Republicans are attempting the preemptive strike against lame duck legislation. This is, of course, the opposite of what the Republicans thought when they were the lame ducks and they did small things like impeach a president.
More and more, Republicans insist on creating a fantasy world that has nothing in common with the reality in which we all operate. They invent something, and then invent “facts†to support the fantasy tale. It’s all as true as a prince rescuing the princess in her tower from a dragon.
It’s not often we get to see a real fiscal conservative in action in the current Republican Party. The rarest of rare breeds, they were run out or co-opted into Bushpublicans who now masquerade as Teapublicans, which is an industry, not a political party. But here we have one in George Voinovich. Look now while you can, because George is retiring.
One of the issues that Republicans have been running on is extending the Bush tax cuts for the top 2% of earners, but a new Gallup poll released today revealed that a large majority of Americans don’t want the tax cuts extended to the richest Americans. 59% favor either letting the tax cuts completely expire, or extending them for those making $250,000 or less.
Turning Karl Marx upside down, Republicans argue that when the money is taken from the poor and Middle Class it is not class warfare. Rather, it is the natural order of things. The money goes where it is supposed to go according to trickle-down economics – into the pockets of the wealthy. Gone unsaid by the Republicans, these tax cuts increased the federal deficit.
Earth to the Republican Party: David Stockman, the architect of Reaganomics, declared on NPR that “Reagan would never support extending the Bush tax cuts.†Stockman took this assertion a step further in calling out the Republican leadership for perverting the notions of fiscal conservatism and betraying what the Party used to stand for. He laid his harshest blame on the Bush administration.
In a speech about the economy at Smith Electric Vehicles in Kansas City, MO, President Obama set out not only to highlight jobs being created in the green energy sector, but he also jabbed at Republicans for distorting his record on tax cuts. Obama said, “We immediately cut taxes, that’s right. You wouldn’t know it from listening to folks, but we cut taxes for working families…”
It seems the GOP, in its quest to distort the racist realities of Arizona’s immigration reform law, is forgetting about W’s ill-fated attempt at pushing his own immigration reform legislation in 2007.
One of the things that have not been reported on about Barack Obama’s visit to Buffalo, NY today was his reaction to a question about abolishing the IRS and moving to a flat tax. Obama said, “In order to have a flat tax that was revenue-neutral, that didn’t add to the deficit, it’d have to be a pretty substantial tax, but it would mean a huge tax break for Warren Buffett.”
A weekly round up of the Republican Wing Nut Circus; from Teabaggers protesting their tax cuts to Rush’s pagan paranoia causing him to blame a volcano on the passage of healthcare reform, it’s been a wild ride.
Fox News continued their network wide attempt to dumb down America tonight on The O’Reilly Factor, when host Bill O’Reilly was complaining about taxes, when he argued that Obama is to blame for increasing state and local taxes because, “all taxes are taxes. That’s taxes. That’s more money out of your wallet.” No Bill. President Obama doesn’t control state and local taxes.
What exactly does the modern day conservative stand for? They’ve got a lot of confusion going on there, and not too many solid, consistent values. We’ve got regression, rage, and stupidity as an on-going theme, and the omni-present hatred of the “otherâ€.
