Warning: Roseanne’s Racism is the Tip of the Iceberg In Trump’s ‘Real America’

ABC canceled Roseanne’s popular TV show after she went on a Twittergasm on par with Donald Trump’s morning Twitter runs. This hate is the “real America” the media is so obsessed with: THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.

The free market won’t abide hate, apparently, unlike the Republican Party. But we all need to look at this hate. This hate is not abnormal, it is exactly what it sounds like here in Trump country, where I live. Hatred for Democrats, saying they deserve to be shot, is standard fare. Hatred for immigrants and black people is a given, only with less pleasant language. Crazy conspiracy theories about the Clintons or Obamas or any other Democrat with any power are the norm.

Look at the hate. The President’s own son retweeted this:

Roseanne’s racism is just the tip of the iceberg here in Trump’s Real America. I don’t write this out of tribalism – what an easy dismissal that is, and what comforting baloney for those who don’t actually live here.

The failure of the media to listen to what is actually happening in this country will be our downfall. These people who so love “real America” that they covered Trump’s hate during the primary with all of the obsessive love that those kinds of click dollars can generate are still pretending that “both sides do it.”

The only people pushing that narrative are the people who are trying to get away with something. The Democratic Party is not perfect, but they are not on par with the Republican Party and liberals do not suggest killing conservatives as a way of saying hello. Yes, I have had conservatives whom I do not know personally tell me, in casual conversation as I am purchasing something from them for example, that liberals and Democrats are evil and should be killed.

Those lies the President tells? They work. They work here in real America. These conspiracy stories aren’t coming from the fringe lunatics, they are coming from the White House. Roseanne is not “economically anxious,” the phrase many used to justify support for Trump even after his racism, assault on women, and more. Roseanne Barr is paying for believing lies her own President told her. That’s not a defense of Roseanne, but it should be a wake up call for us all.

Pretending racism and hate are not successfully being weaponized to divide us is dangerous to our democracy. The media needs to face the reality that Roseanne’s hate is nothing special; it’s exactly what is behind the “real America” they are so obsessed with. They need to face this reality so the kind of hate Trump provoked during the election and continues to provoke as president is covered better in the future.
